About Dr. John Gill

John Gill has worked for over 38 years in the area of scientific and technological research for people with disabilities. He holds various appointments in this field. He has visited 40 countries and written 250 publications.

  • Design of fonts for legibility
  • Accessibility of public access terminals
  • Tactile communication
  • Orientation systems
  • Automated production of braille and large print
  • Smart card and biometric systems
  • Accessibility of information and communication technology systems

  • Chartered Engineer
  • European Engineer
  • Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology
  • BSc in engineering science
  • MSc in control engineering
  • PhD in engineering/psychology/computing

Senior research fellow at Warwick University where he was head of Research Unit for the Blind

Senior research fellow at Brunel University

1986 to 2009
Chief Scientist at RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People)

Awards:

  • OBE for services to information technology for the partially sighted
  • Honorary doctor of science in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of information systems for those with visual impairments
  • He is an honorary professor at Brunel University, School of Engineering and Design.
